Colon Car Show & Magic Festival

It was magic week in Colon Michigan and the whole family went to share in the festivities. There was a car show this year and it was a pretty big success considering it was the first one for the city of Colon. Each car had a bucket out front and you were supposed to throw a quarter into your favorite cars bucket. The car with the most quarters wins a prize! There were loads of prizes donated by the various local shops so more than half of the cars shown in these pictures received prizes.

James did his usual romp around the craft fair and local beach, Mary took in the evening magic show which featured some of the worlds best magicians. Dad got to spend some time in the magic shop (which is always a fun experience for me) and also went on the graveyard tour where famous magicians like Blackstone are buried.

4th of July in Colon

The Fourth of July celebration in Colon is truly a marvel for the year. Our family and I had a wonderful time again. Our day began at 11am watching the parade go down main street from the high school. Our friends Walter and Mary Weaver were gracious host so we had a front row seat for most of the activities. There were many highlights of the parade but most of our group felt the flyover by the jets was the best part.

Once the parade ended and we took a short break, then went down for the festivities which included many games and activities including a couple new ones. Our group then hooked up for a magic show at Abbott’s where we enjoyed a wonderful performance by Gordon Miller.

Special thanks to Walter and Mary Weaver for having us. Thanks to Grandma for joining us as well.

Magic Get Together 2009

The Abbott Magic Get Together has been going on for over 70 years. Located in Colon MI, the Magic Capital of the World, James spent a couple days about town watching the magic. Before we left, James drew us a map of the street complete with addresses so we would know where to come back to.

4th of July Parade 2009

Our annual trek to Colon Michigan for the 4th of July Parade came about, and once again James had a blast. We did not take as many pics this time so we could enjoy the fun, but probably the highlight of the day came at the dunk tank. James just had a blast throwing balls at the guy in the dunk tank, and when he fell into the water he would laugh and laugh. I was so entertained by the event I did not even think about getting out the camera, oh well. Needless to say, a fun time was had by all including the parents. If you ever are looking for something different to do on the 4th, give the little town of Colon Michigan a try.

Christmas in Colon 2008

What a blast we had in Colon this Christmas, a very cold and snowy day, tents were set up with hot cocoa and cookies, a small petting zoo, a Santa parade with Santa ending up in the library where the kids could make Christmas crafts. The celebration ended with a free magic show at Abbotts. A very traditional Christmas celebration, how refreshing. Although the weather was very cold, we went home with a warm fuzzy feeling from the events of the day.

Magic Show in Colon 2008

James got to see a live escape by a girl who was placed inside a box then hoisted up into the air. The rope holding her box up was lit on fire and everyone though she would perish, but when the box was opened she was gone and then came out from the pizza parlor with a pizza. The crowd of about 100-200 people applauded and it was a great fall day for all.

The police and fire dept were on hand not only in case of an emergency but also to block off main street from traffic. You have to wonder what people traveling down 86 thought when they had to be detoured because a woman was bound and hung from a burning rope on mainstreet. They must have thought they were in the dark ages.

Once the street was blocked off the first thing James did was run across it, must be a natural instinct for a 4 year old.

4th of July Parade 2008

This is Colon MI, the Magic Capital of the World, and each year they have a huge parade and festival to celebrate the 4th. James has a blast each time he comes here. There is also a arts and craft show with games for kids and prizes for them as well. After the parade, and golf, and swimming, we finished up the day at our friends Walter and Mary’s house where they had a barbecue until the evening fireworks show began. James slept all the way home after staying up for the fireworks, a better night sleep was never had by anyone I think.
